Understanding the Need for Dual Diagnosis and Addiction Treatment

Substance use disorders often develop alongside conditions like depression, anxiety, or trauma-related disorders. At Kora Behavioral Health, we understand how these challenges interact—and how critical it is to treat them together. Our clinicians perform detailed assessments to develop individualized treatment plans that address the full scope of a client’s needs. Through structured therapy, medication management, and ongoing clinical support, we empower individuals to achieve sustainable recovery and improved mental health.

What We Treat

Our team provides targeted care for a wide range of  substance use disorders and co-occuring mental health disorders, including:

  • Alcohol addiction

  • Opioid addiction

  • Cocaine and stimulant use disorders

  • Prescription drug misuse

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Trauma-related disorders

We use a multidisciplinary approach that combines psychiatric evaluation, individual and group therapy, and MAT when clinically appropriate. This integrated model allows clients to address both addiction and underlying emotional or behavioral issues that contribute to relapse risk.

Alcohol addiction, also known as alcohol use disorder, is a chronic condition characterized by an inability to control or stop drinking despite negative consequences. Over time, excessive alcohol use alters brain chemistry, leading to physical dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. This addiction can affect relationships, employment, and physical health, increasing the risk of liver disease, heart problems, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Opioid addiction occurs when a person becomes physically and psychologically dependent on opioids—drugs that include prescription painkillers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, as well as illicit substances like heroin or fentanyl. Opioids alter the brain’s reward system, creating powerful cravings and compulsive drug-seeking behavior. Without treatment, opioid addiction can lead to overdose, respiratory failure, and severe withdrawal symptoms that make quitting difficult without medical support.

Cocaine and stimulant use disorders involve the misuse of substances that increase energy, alertness, and euphoria—such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and certain prescription stimulants like Adderall. These drugs stimulate the central nervous system and raise dopamine levels, creating intense but short-lived highs followed by crashes and cravings.

Prolonged use can cause cardiovascular issues, sleep disturbances, mood instability, and cognitive impairments. Dependence develops quickly, often leading to cycles of binge use and withdrawal.

Prescription drug misuse refers to taking medication in a way not intended by a prescribing doctor—whether by using higher doses, taking someone else’s prescription, or using the drug to achieve a high. Commonly misused medications include opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. Misuse can lead to addiction, tolerance, and dangerous withdrawal symptoms, as well as long-term physical and mental health complications.

Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, describes the condition in which an individual experiences both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder simultaneously. Common combinations include addiction paired with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each condition can worsen the symptoms of the other, making integrated treatment essential.

Effective dual diagnosis care addresses both mental health and addiction through coordinated therapy, medication management, and ongoing clinical support.
